When the Schlossplatz practically becomes Jülich’s vineyard, then it’s summer… Socializing, enjoying the “Citadel” backdrop and, of course, the variety of grapes are the order of the day when the Rhineland-Palatinate winegrowers are guests.
If you can’t get a seat at one of the many tables and are well prepared, bring your own picnic blanket. The Schlossplatz then becomes a picnic area until midnight.
According to winemaker Richard Friess, who travels from Frei-Laubersheim, this was not always the case. The Vogel-Friess winery was one of the first to serve wine at the Jülich Wine Summer. Friess and his wife Anke, née Vogel, experienced the first five tough years when Mayor Stommel and a small delegation from the press were among the few guests. Since then, things have changed dramatically. Both he and his colleague Volker Schäfer report that regular customers start asking in spring: “When is the wine festival this year?” and then even plan their vacation around it. “The group at this table is there every evening,” says Volker Schäfer, delighted with the regular customers. Of course, orders are also eagerly placed – and the goods are delivered immediately in the coming weeks, the winegrowers say. Service to the front door.
The wine festival is open on Thursday and Friday from 4 pm to midnight, Saturday from 2 pm to midnight and on Sunday from 12 pm to 8 pm.
