The fascinating history of the Jülich sugar factory is closely linked to Napoleon. When the French Emperor imposed a blockade against British goods in 1806, the import of sugar from South America into the French-occupied Rhineland was also affected. As a result, farmers began to cultivate sugar beets. In 1880, Alexander Paul Schoeller and Julius Brockhoff founded the Jülich sugar factory. Since then, a lot has happened.
Today, the Jülich sugar factory is part of the family-owned company Pfeiffer & Langen and has been producing high-quality sugar for over 140 years. Through continuous innovations and investments, production has become quieter, less odorous, and more environmentally friendly. In 2021, the boiler house was remodeled, resulting in a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions. The goal is to produce completely CO2-neutral sugar by 2040.
The Jülich sugar factory is an important employer in the region.
