For the love of music
Leslie Webb’s legacy for the next generation of musicians in Jülich is not a “solo”, but a joint scholarship. Following the death of the multi-instrumentalist in summer 2021, his life partner Sigrid Dömer has set up a scholarship in his name for the Jülich Music School.
With the “Dr. Leslie Webb Scholarship”, after a starting capital of 5000 euros, 2500 euros will be available annually in the future. As many people as possible should benefit from the scholarship. A good dozen pupils will be able to receive support from these funds. This applies to particularly talented pupils, for whom teaching time can be extended, or financially disadvantaged pupils, for whom attending music school can only be made possible in the first place.
Leslie Webb originally came from near London, says Sigrid Doemer, and wanted nothing more than a trumpet for his 12th birthday. In order not to endanger the peace in the neighborhood, his parents refused his wish, but gave him a clarinet instead. Les Webb taught himself to play. After studying microbiology, the Englishman finally came to the research center in Jülich via Berlin and Dortmund in the 1980s. Here he joined various formations, playing in jazz bands as well as the cover band 6aus49.
Everyone agrees that music is more than just a leisure activity; it promotes people and their personality as a whole. “And that’s exactly what Les wants,” emphasizes her partner Sigrid Dömer.
