Research meets school: Located in the middle of the research center’s campus, the JuLab school laboratory invites entire classes to conduct their own research and experiments. What exactly do biology lab technicians do, what do neuroscientists do, what is the bioeconomy and why is hydrogen the beacon of hope for the clean energy of the future? The JuLab offers young people the opportunity to find answers to these and other questions through vacation programs, experimentation days and internships. Since 2005, the school laboratory has been awakening the curiosity of children and young people to try out their own research skills and get to the bottom of things. The school laboratory’s offer is based on the current focus areas of the research center Energy, Information and Sustainable Bioeconomy and the associated topics of environment, climate and brain research. Experiment kits to borrow bring scientific and technical questions into the classroom and also into the daycare centers around Jülich and the Euregio. Put on a lab coat and, equipped with goggles, a microscope and all the necessary materials, actively research and experiment for yourself, pursue your own questions with expert support and discover how much fun science is – this is what makes the experiment days for school classes and courses the most popular offer in the school laboratory. One of the highlights of the JuLab year is undoubtedly the Helmholtz Student Congress in November. The declared aim of the annual event is to raise awareness of Jülich research topics among young people, to show them opportunities for participation and to get them talking to researchers.
Further training courses for educators, teachers and those who want to become educators are also an integral part of the JuLab offer. Whether tailor-made on request or from the Children’s Research Foundation’s catalog – because JuLab is a network partner and coordination center – the portfolio is diverse.
