Good German language skills are essential for immigrants to take advantage of educational opportunities and succeed in the job market. Integration courses help learners acquire the language and consist of a total of 660 hours of instruction, including 600 hours of language courses, which conclude with the DTZ exam (“German Test for Immigrants”), and 60 hours of orientation about Germany, ending with the “Living in Germany” test.
Foreigners who immigrate legally to Germany and do not have basic German language skills are required to attend an integration course. EU citizens and ethnic German resettlers can participate voluntarily. Successful participants can apply for German citizenship after seven years of residence without needing to retake the language test.
The cost of an integration course is 792 euros, with participants typically contributing 1.20 euros per hour. Unemployed individuals or those with low income may be exempt from fees under certain conditions.
