Today, Brückenkopf Park Jülich is a popular destination with vast green spaces, a zoo, and numerous recreational activities. However, many visitors may not know that the park owes its current design to a very special event: the 1998 State Garden Show (Landesgartenschau).
At that time, the area was transformed into a breathtaking garden landscape that attracted visitors from all over North Rhine-Westphalia. Under the motto “Gardens Full of Life,” the event showcased artistic flowerbeds, themed gardens, and sustainable concepts for park design. The goal was to strengthen the connection between nature, recreation, and environmental awareness.
A unique aspect of the State Garden Show was the successful integration of the historic fortress structure of Brückenkopf. The old walls and moats were incorporated into the landscape design, creating a fascinating blend of history and modern garden architecture. Water features, bridges, and blooming meadows turned the park into an idyllic space for visitors to explore.
After the State Garden Show ended, the park remained as a permanent recreational area. Many of the gardens designed at the time still exist today, giving Brückenkopf Park its distinctive character. The lush tree population, beautifully maintained green spaces, and diverse landscapes serve as a reminder of the green legacy left behind by the event.
Even today, the combination of nature and leisure remains one of the park’s defining features. Whether taking a stroll through blooming gardens, visiting the zoo, or engaging in sports activities, the State Garden Show has left a lasting impact, turning Jülich into a green oasis that continues to delight locals and visitors alike.
