International Museum Day has been celebrated worldwide since 1978. In Jülich, it is always celebrated on the 2nd Sunday in May.
The aim is to draw attention to the diversity and importance of museums. In Germany, the day is held under the patronage of the current President of the Federal Council. International Museum Day in Germany is proclaimed by the German National Committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM Germany) and organized by the German Museums Association in cooperation with the numerous state museum associations and offices of the federal states. The German Museums Association is responsible for the central coordination of Museum Day.
